Iron Infusion (Prescription Only)
An iron infusion delivers iron directly into a vein to treat iron deficiency, usually when tablets have not worked or cannot be tolerated. It is prescription-only: you need blood tests, including ferritin and haemoglobin, and a physician’s order. Our partner clinic reviews that order and decides whether it can be given safely at home or should be done in clinic.
What is usually in the bag
Intravenous iron preparation
Products such as ferric carboxymaltose, iron sucrose or ferric derisomaltose. The prescriber chooses the product and calculates the dose from your weight and blood results.
Saline diluent
Most preparations are diluted in a small bag of sodium chloride. Iron infusions are not mixed with vitamins or other drip ingredients.
Emergency medicines on hand
Not part of the infusion itself, but a nurse giving IV iron must have medicines and equipment ready to treat an allergic reaction.
The iron product, the total dose and the number of infusions come from the prescribing physician, not from a menu, and the partner clinic follows that order exactly.
Who tends to book it
- People with iron deficiency anaemia confirmed by blood tests, whose doctor has decided oral iron is not enough, too slow or not tolerated.
- Women with heavy periods or who have recently given birth, when their own doctor has prescribed intravenous iron.
- Patients with conditions that affect absorption, such as inflammatory bowel disease or after some types of stomach surgery, under specialist care.
- Anyone with a valid prescription who finds it hard to travel to a clinic, provided the partner clinic agrees home administration is appropriate.
Check with a doctor first
- Anyone without blood tests and a physician’s order; this is not available on request.
- People with iron overload conditions such as haemochromatosis, or anaemia not caused by iron deficiency.
- Anyone with a previous serious reaction to an IV iron product.
- Women in the first trimester of pregnancy, unless a specialist has decided otherwise.
- People with an active infection, until their doctor has reviewed the timing.
How the visit goes
Send the prescription and recent blood results on WhatsApp before anything is booked. The partner clinic’s physician checks the product, dose and test dates, and may decide the infusion should take place in clinic, not at home.
If home administration is agreed, the nurse arrives with emergency medicines, checks vitals and history, then watches the cannula closely, because iron leaking into the skin can leave long-lasting brown staining.
After the infusion you are observed for at least 30 minutes for signs of an allergic reaction, such as rash, itching, breathlessness or dizziness. The nurse does not leave during this period.
How long it takes
Infusion time depends on the product and dose, ranging from around 15 minutes to an hour or more, and some products are given over several visits. The observation period afterwards adds at least half an hour. With paperwork checks and vitals, set aside roughly one and a half to two hours.
How often
Frequency is set entirely by your prescribing doctor, based on how much iron your body needs. Some people need a single infusion, others two or more spaced apart. Repeat blood tests, usually several weeks later, show whether iron stores have recovered. Ongoing deficiency needs its underlying cause investigated, not just repeated infusions.
What shapes the price
- The iron product and total dose prescribed
- Number of infusions in the course
- Whether the partner clinic needs its own physician review or extra tests
- Home or clinic administration, and emirate
- Insurance coverage, which varies by plan and requires the prescription

The UAE angle
Iron deficiency is common worldwide, especially among women of childbearing age, and UAE residents can have ferritin and haemoglobin checked at most clinics and labs. Because IV iron carries a small but real risk of serious allergic reaction, some partner clinics only give it in clinic, where resuscitation equipment is close at hand. Whether home administration is suitable is the partner clinic’s decision. Ask your insurer in advance whether your plan covers the infusion.
Who may give an IV drip in the UAE
In the UAE an IV drip is a medical procedure, not a beauty treatment. It is given by clinicians licensed for it, working under a licensed health facility, after an assessment. Which authority licenses them depends on where the visit happens.
| Where | Licensing authority |
|---|---|
| Dubai | Dubai Health Authority (DHA) |
| Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Al Dhafra | Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH) |
| Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah | Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) |
We pass bookings only to partner clinics licensed for the emirate of your visit. You are always welcome to ask the nurse for their name and licence details.

Questions people ask
Can I book an iron infusion without a prescription?
No. Intravenous iron is a prescription medicine, and giving it without blood tests and a physician’s order would be unsafe. If you suspect low iron, start with your GP or a clinic for a ferritin and haemoglobin test. If an infusion is prescribed, send the order to us and the partner clinic will review it.
Why might the clinic say it must be done in clinic?
Serious allergic reactions to IV iron are uncommon but can develop quickly, and some clinics prefer to give it where full emergency equipment and extra staff are available. A clinician may also choose clinic administration for a first dose, for people with many allergies or asthma, or for certain products. This is a safety decision, not a refusal of care.
What side effects should I watch for afterwards?
Some people have a headache, nausea, joint or muscle aches, or a metallic taste for a day or two. Contact the partner clinic or your doctor if symptoms persist. Seek urgent help on 998 or 999 if you develop swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing or feel faint, even after the nurse has left.
Is oral iron a reasonable alternative?
For many people, yes. Iron tablets are usually the first treatment, and taking them on alternate days or with vitamin C may improve absorption and reduce stomach upset; ask your doctor which applies to you. Infusions are generally reserved for cases where tablets have failed or cannot be tolerated, or where iron needs replacing more quickly.
